Kansas City Kansas Community College vaulted back into the thick of the Jayhawk Conference baseball race with an impressive sweep at Fort Scott Tuesday.

The 8-2, 12-1 sweep boosted the Blue Devils into fourth place at 4-3 in the Jayhawk East and 15-3 overall, the best record in the entire conference. One of only two teams with just three losses, the Blue Devils trail Cowley County (10-4), Neosho County (7-3) and Johnson County (6-4) in the East standings.

With several makeup games to be added to the schedule, KCKCC has a chance to make up more ground this week, hosting league-leading Cowley County Thursday at Community America at Village West at 1 p.m. and then going to third place Johnson County, Saturday, also at 1 p.m. The twin bill at JCCC is first of six straight doubleheaders on the road for KCKCC including five in the Jayhawk.

Route-going performances by freshmen Jake King and Mark Spreckels highlighted Tuesday’s sweep at Fort Scott. King scattered six hits, struck out six and walked one in the 7-inning 8-2 opener while Spreckels allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in the 12-1 8-inning nightap.

Sophomores Mike Rezin of Piper and Dale Ricketts each had two hits with Ricketts driving in two runs and Rezin one with a stolen base in the opener. The Blue Devils pounded out 17 hits in the night cap with Shaun Williams leading the way with a double, three singles and two RBI. Hunter Johnson added three hits and two RBI while T.J. Lorson drove in two runs with a double and single, Scott Hull singled twice and drove in two and Laramie Kirkwood had two singles and one RBI. All are freshmen.
